Mullagh Gaa Club
Tony Reddin RIP PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 03 March 2015 15:10

It was with great sadness that Mullagh GAA Club learned of the passing of the great Tony Reddin.  Tony was originally from Carra, and was always very proud of his Mullagh roots.  Tony first played hurling with Mullagh in 1933 and won an East Board Juvenile medal in that year, this was his only county championship medal in his very distinguished hurling career.  He was wing forward on the team the following year.  He played at centre field in the East Board junior final of 1938.  His first day in goals for Mullagh was in May of 1939.  Mullagh were senior in 1940 and for a number of years after this he was their regular goalie.  Tony’s first match for Galway was in July 1940 in the Connacht junior final which Galway won.  Tony left Mullagh for Lorrha in February of 1947 to continue the second half of his career for which his achievements with Tipperary are widely known.  He won three All-Ireland Senior hurling medals in a row 1949, 1950 and 1951 – the only Galway born man with such a record.   He also won three Munster senior championship medals, five Railway Cup medals with Munster and six National League Medals with Tipperary.  In 1984 he was awarded the ultimate accolade as Goalie on the Team of the century.

Tony was always very proud of his Mullagh roots as much as the people of Mullagh were proud of him and his achievements, and many times down through the years Tony came back to Mullagh to different events that took place at Mullagh GAA pitch.  The most recent visit being the opening of the new dressing rooms in October 2011.  He also presided at the official opening of our second field the Brian Donoghue pitch.  But he was very proud to be invited over to the Mullagh Grounds to be here for the unveiling of a plaque which is proudly displayed on the front of our hall in his honour.

Tony Reddin, a legend and a gentleman.

To his wife Maura, his sons, daughters and their families, and all the Reddin family we extend our heartfelt sympathy.
