Mullagh were defeated in the County Senior League semi-final at Athenry on Saturday (24 April 2010) by an Athenry team who were up for this game conscious of having been defeated by Mullagh in the group championship game last year.
Mullagh took an early lead from a Catriona Cahalan ground shot to the corner of the net inside 6 minutes but by the 18th minute Athenry had clawed back that lead thanks to points from Noreen Coen and Therese Maher (3). Mullagh’s tendency to foul cost them dearly as Maher was in shooting form with a further three points and a point from Mary Keogh left the half time score Athenry 0-8 Mullagh 1-0.
Athenry continued to build on that lead in the second half with a point from Therese Maher equalled by Therese Manton followed by a point from Noreen Coen which was pegged back by Aoife Donohue and which proved to be the last score for Mullagh. The points for Athenry came with renewed frequency and the goals from Noreen Coen, Brenda Kerins and Therese Maher put the nail in the coffin for Mullagh.
Mullagh look forward to the championship however and the return from injury of Sinead Cahalan and Rachel Monaghan.
